Getting Started with DMARC Digests

DMARC Digests is a paid tool that helps you understand and monitor how your domain is being used to send email. It provides visibility into which sources are sending messages from your domain and whether those messages are properly authenticated using SPF, DKIM, and DMARC.

This guide walks through what DMARC is, how DMARC Digests works, and answers some of the most common questions about getting set up and troubleshooting.

💡 What Is DMARC?

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance) is an email authentication standard that helps domain owners monitor and protect their domains from unauthorized use, such as spoofing or phishing.

DMARC works alongside two other authentication methods:

Authentication Method What It Does
SPF (Sender Policy Framework) Ensures that mail servers sending on behalf of your domain are authorized.
DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) Adds a cryptographic signature to verify that the email hasn’t been altered in transit.
DMARC Instructs receiving mail servers what to do (none, quarantine, or reject) if SPF or DKIM checks fail.

By monitoring DMARC reports, you can see whether emails using your domain are properly authenticated — and take steps to improve domain reputation and prevent spoofing.

🔍 What Is DMARC Digests?

DMARC Digests turns complex DMARC data into easy-to-read summaries.
It shows you which services are sending messages from your domain — and whether those messages pass authentication checks.

Why it’s useful:

  • Monitor sending sources: Identify all tools and platforms sending on your behalf.

  • Spot issues quickly: See if messages are failing DMARC and why.

  • Protect your domain: Detect unauthorized senders or ā€œunknown sourcesā€ impersonating your domain.

🧭 How It Works

  1. Set up a DMARC record for your sending domain.
This tells receiving mail servers to send DMARC reports to your domain’s designated reporting address.

  2. DMARC Digests receives and processes those reports.
We parse them into digestible charts and summaries.

  3. You review the data in your DMARC Digests dashboard to see:

    • Which services are sending on behalf of your domain.

    • Whether they pass or fail DMARC authentication.

    • Recommendations for improving alignment and compliance.

🗺ļø DMARC Digests Interface Overview

The DMARC Digests dashboard gives you a clear view of:

  • Known sources: Legitimate sending platforms you use (like Postmark, Gmail, or Salesforce).

  • Unknown sources: Mail servers you don’t recognize — often spam or spoofing attempts.

  • DMARC compliance summary: A visual overview of which sources are passing or failing authentication.

  • Policy recommendations: Guidance on when to safely move your DMARC policy from none → quarantine → reject.

🧩 Common Questions

🔑 How can I change the account owner?

Only account owners can update subscription or billing details.
If you need to transfer ownership:

  1. Contact support@postmarkapp.com.

  2. We’ll ask you to confirm:

    • The last 4 digits of the card on file.

    • Which existing verified user should become the new owner.

  3. Once verified, we’ll update ownership and confirm by email.

💳 How do I get a copy of my invoice?

If you’re not receiving invoices or need an old one resent, contact support@postmarkapp.com.
Ā

We’ll resend your invoice from our billing system and recommend adding invoice+statements@dmarcdigests.com to your contacts to prevent spam filtering.

📅 How can I manage my weekly or monthly digests?

DMARC Digests can send weekly or monthly summaries of your domain’s compliance results.
Each user can manage their own digest preferences from their account settings.

If you’d like another person to receive these reports:

  • Add them as a user to your DMARC Digests account, or

  • Set up an automatic email forwarding rule in your inbox.

🧮 Why are my reported email numbers lower than my sent emails?

Not all mail servers participate in DMARC reporting.

This means your ā€œsentā€ count in your CRM or ESP may be higher than what appears in DMARC Digests. It can also take up to 48 hours for some receiving servers to send us their DMARC reports.

🧑💻 Why don’t I see message content or recipient details?

DMARC reports never include message content, subject lines, or recipient data. They only contain authentication metadata — not the actual email.
Ā

This protects sender and recipient privacy while still allowing domain-level analysis.

🕵ļøā™€ļø What’s the difference between known and unknown sources?

  • Known sources: Legitimate services you use to send email (e.g., Postmark, Google Workspace, Salesforce).

  • Unknown sources: Mail servers sending messages using your domain without authorization — often spam or forwarding services.

The goal is to make sure all known sources are DMARC compliant.
Once they are, you can safely update your DMARC policy to start blocking unknown senders.

💯 How can I achieve 100% DMARC compliance?

Full DMARC compliance means all legitimate sources sending on behalf of your domain pass both SPF and DKIM.

Steps to get there:

  1. Identify all legitimate sending sources.

  2. Work with each source to ensure SPF/DKIM authentication aligns with your domain.

  3. Once everything is aligned, gradually strengthen your DMARC policy from none → quarantine → reject.

Updating too quickly can block legitimate messages, so move carefully and monitor your results in DMARC Digests.

ā° When should I update my DMARC policy?

There’s no one-size-fits-all schedule. Most domains start with p=none while identifying senders, then gradually move to stricter enforcement.

Policy What It Does
none Monitor only — no impact on delivery.
quarantine Sends unauthenticated emails to spam.
reject Blocks unauthenticated emails entirely.

We recommend staying at none until all known sources are compliant, then slowly progressing to quarantine and reject while continuing to monitor.
