📉 Noticing DMARC Reporting Spikes or Dips? Here’s How to Investigate

If you’re using DMARC Digests and spot an unexpected change in report volume—like a sudden spike or dip—it can feel confusing, especially when the cause isn’t immediately clear. While DMARC surface the data we receive from third-party senders, we don’t always have insight into why a provider may have skipped or changed their reporting.

That said, there are some helpful ways to investigate and get a clearer picture.

🛠ļø Troubleshooting Tips: How to Dig Into DMARC Volume Changes

Here are a few steps you can take to better understand what’s behind a reporting discrepancy:

1. Look for patterns in sending behavior
Have there been any recent changes on your side—like a new provider, marketing campaign, or infrastructure change? Shifts like these can affect who sends mail on your behalf and how it gets reported.

2. Review your subdomains
Are some subdomains reporting differently than others? Or did you recently add or remove a subdomain from your DNS or sending setup? These changes can impact how your DMARC data shows up in reports.

3. Check your DMARC record
If you’ve recently updated your DMARC policy, added a new rua address, or changed the structure of your record, that could affect what data you're receiving. Make sure everything is configured as intended.

4. Understand provider variability
Not all mailbox providers report the same way. Some send DMARC reports daily, while others might combine or skip days—especially smaller or regional providers. Occasional reporting gaps are normal and don’t always mean something’s wrong.

💡 What to Expect from Us

DMARC reporting is based on data sent from third-party providers, which means we can’t always guarantee consistent behavior across them. What we can do is help you make sense of the data that is available.

If something seems off, feel free to reach out. And in some cases, our Deliverability team may be able to help investigate further.
